A plethora of Group 1 races this round with three in Sydney (The Epsom, The Metropolitan and Flight Stakes at Randwick) and the Turnbull Stakes (Flemington) in Melbourne.

There are also five Group 2 and three Group 3 races during the round.

Here are the races to get stuck into.

It’s the Flight Stakes that should draw your attention here. A race for three-year-old fillies in which favourites have an excellent record. In the 30 years since 1989 15 favourites have won with four minor placings. This year’s race has fallen away with just six runners and two clear standout picks in Funstar ($175K) and Probabeel ($175K). Funstar holds slight favouritism over Probabeel.

The Turnbull Stakes always attracts a crack field and if you want to invest in the favourites you’ll put a huge dent in your salary cap with Mystic Journey priced at $500K. The best way into the race is Queensland Derby winner Mr Quickie ($300K), the Phillip Stokes trained gelding flew home to finish third in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) in his first race this preparation and is the SC pick of the race.

The other Group 1 races the Epsom Handicap and the The Metropolitan should probably be avoided. Both have attracted big fields of well performed horse and therefore my tip is to target some of the “lesser” Group races on offer.

There are plenty of points on offer in the juvenile Group 2 and Group 3 races, starting with the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (Randwick). There are some easy points to snare with just six runners, including Everest-bound Osborne Bulls ($425K) and Classique Legend ($300K).

There’s another Group 2 sprint race, the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington, but Everest pair Santa Ana Lane ($500K) and Sunlight ($500K) are expensive.

Back at Randwick, the Group 2 Hill Stakes has also attracted a small field but is a little tricky, and the Group 3 two-year-old races — Breeders’ Plate and Gimcrack Stakes — really don’t provide any value.

At Flemington, Miami Bound ($125K) stands out in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes but it’s a capacity field and the Group 2 Blazer Stakes for mares is an even race, although favourite Fidelia ($200K) is well priced.
