Essendon has delisted forward Mitch Brown.

The Bombers told Brown he would not be offered a contract for season 2020 despite playing 16 games and booting 21 goals this season.

Brown played 55 games for the club, averaging just over a goal a game.

“On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Mitch for his service throughout his four years at Essendon,” football boss Dan Richardson said.

“Mitch showed tremendous leadership both on and off the field and allowed great versatility to our line-up. We wish Mitch all the best in his future endeavours.”

Brown’s axing makes seven delistings at the Bombers with Jake Long, son of club great Michael Long, ruckman Zac Clarke, Trent Mynott, Tom Jok, Ben McNiece and Jordan Houlahan also cut.

David Myers, Matt Dea and Mark Baguley have retired.

SYDNEY has delisted Daniel Menzel after a single season at the Swans.

The Herald Sun understands Menzel was told of the decision on Wednesday afternoon ahead of list lodgements on Thursday.

The enigmatic forwards had hoped to survive next year after dodging delistment in recent weeks as other teammates were let go by Sydney.

But Menzel and teammate Jack Maibaum were told of their delisting on Wednesday.

Menzel has fought back from four ACL tears after being destined for stardom as a young Geelong half forward who kicked 5.2 in the last round of the 2011 home-and-away season.

Even after those reconstructions he kicked 40.16 in 2017, but after a hot start to 2018 had an adverse reaction to injections into his groin.

He finished with 27.15 for the season but was delisted and eventually found a new home at Sydney but immediately needed groin surgery upon arriving.

It meant his start to this season was delayed but he kicked seven goals in seven games this year and would have been fit to start pre-season for one of the first times in his career.

LACHIE Henderson will have to join a fourth club if he’s to continue his AFL career after Geelong announced it wasn’t offering the veteran a new deal.

The Cats delisted three players – Ryan Abbott and Oscar Brownless were also demoted – but the club said it was committed to redrafting the latter pair as rookies.

Geelong also announced it was promoting rookies Zach Guthrie and Sam Simpson off the rookie list.

But Henderson must find a new club if he’s to build on his career tally of 171 matches.

Selected by Brisbane with pick 8 in the 2007 national draft, he spent two years at the Lions before being traded to Carlton.

After five years at the Blues the former Geelong Falcon joined the Cats as a free agent, going on to play 54 matches across four seasons.

But injury and form, along with the development of teammates such as Mark Blicavs, relegated him to just 13 games over the past two years.

“Lachie filled a number of roles with us … (he) has shown himself to be a selfless clubman and a great teammate over his time with the Cats,” list boss Stephen Wells said.

“He helped us win a lot of games and always took up whatever role we needed him to do.”
